NHS 111 is a medical helpline available 24/7 for people of all ages in England who urgently need advice and treatment for themselves or a loved one. The helpline now includes a mental health option for anyone – including children, young people and those with neurodevelopmental needs – who feels unsafe, distraught, or concerned about their mental health.

When you contact NHS 111 and choose option 2, you will be able to speak to a trained mental health professional who will listen to your concerns, provide reassurance and offer advice for the next steps to take.

If you’re deaf or have hearing loss, you can use the following link to be connected to local crisis service – NHS 111 – SignVideo.

Some of the support services that you can be referred into include:

  • next day GP appointment
  • alternative crisis services in the community such as safe havens, wellbeing centres and community crisis support centres
  • signposted to other voluntary mental health helplines e.g. SANE, Samaritans
  • Crisis Resolution and Home Treatment Team

This is an additional way to contact crisis services and will not be replacing the Trust’s Mental Health Crisis Line which you can still contact on 0800 0234 650

Remember that in emergency situations where there is an immediate risk to life, you should continue to contact 999 or go to A&E.
