Hundreds of thousands use ‘Amazon-style’ prescription tracker in NHS App

Nearly 400,000 people have used a new prescription tracking feature in the NHS App in the first ten weeks since its launch, helping reduce unnecessary calls and visits to pharmacies.

Tracking medicines on the app

The new “Amazon-Style” prescription tracker has been used 715,000 times by patients to see if medicines are ready to collect or dispatched by pharmacy. This saves wasted trips and phone calls, frees up pharmacists to focus on care, and puts you in control of your prescriptions just like tracking your online shopping.

Your use of the tracker has cut phone calls and visits to pharmacies, including Boots and over 1,650 high street chemists, freeing pharmacists to focus on caring for you.

A pharmacist shares what’s changed

 Pharmacist Yasif Salim said,

“We initially thought the phone lines had gone quiet because normally they’re overwhelmed with patients calling for prescription updates. Days used to feel noisy and stressful.” He explained, “The tracker didn’t add any extra work for the pharmacy team; they could continue their usual process while the Pharmacy Manager handled everything digitally.”

Impact of the tracking feature

Dr Vin Diwakar from NHS England said,

“It’s fantastic that so many of us are using the new tracking feature. This means you can check your prescription’s status before heading to the chemist, giving you more control over your care through the NHS App. It also frees up pharmacists’ time by reducing the volume of calls they receive.”

Voices from health policy experts

Dr Charlotte Refsum, Director of Health Policy at the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change, highlighted that this digital innovation “makes healthcare easier and more efficient, helping you manage your care confidently while easing pressure on busy pharmacy staff.”

The impact of the NHS App

With 37.4 million of us registered and 11.4 million logging in monthly, the NHS App is helping millions manage care from ordering repeat prescriptions to viewing test results.

The tracker is live in 1,650 pharmacies and will reach nearly 5,000 more, covering 60% of pharmacies within a year. Health Secretary Wes Streeting said,

“Nearly 400,000 people are already using the tracker because it saves time and hassle.” He encouraged everyone to “get the NHS App to track prescriptions, skip queues, and free up time for both you and your pharmacist.”
