NHS approves new IT system for GPs to help transform care

NHS England has approved a new cloud-based IT system for general practice—the first of its kind in 25 years. The system, developed by Medicus Health, aims to modernise care, reduce admin burdens, and support more joined-up services across the NHS.

A Major Shift for GP Practices

For the first time in decades, GP surgeries will have more choice in how they manage patient care digitally. Thanks to feedback from clinicians and patients across early-adopter sites, a new system from Medicus Health has been approved designed with your experience in mind.

Already in use at four practices, including Wilmslow Health Centre in Cheshire, the new platform is helping over 42,000 people access more coordinated and timely care. Staff say the system is already making a difference improving access to records, reducing admin time, and helping GPs focus more on what matters: their patients.

What’s New?

  • Cloud-based and mobile-friendly: Whether in the surgery or out in the community, GPs can securely access records to support people wherever they are.
  • Connected to 24 NHS systems: From prescriptions to referrals and the NHS App, your care can now be managed more smoothly across services.
  • Built on national standards: This means better communication and safer information sharing across the NHS.

What People Are Saying

Dr Amanda Doyle, NHS England’s National Director of Primary Care, said:

“This is the first shake-up of the GP IT market in a quarter of a century. It’s a big step forward in helping teams work better and smarter to deliver joined-up care.”

Dr Amar Ahmed, a GP using the new system, shared:

“I’ve seen a real difference. It’s helped us spend less time on admin and more time with patients.”

Thanks to everyone who has shared their views and insights, the NHS is learning how technology can better serve people at every stage of care. Your experiences are shaping the future of how primary care works.

What Happens Next?

More than 25 Integrated Care Boards are looking into adopting the system, and by April 2026, even more IT suppliers are expected to come on board. This means more choice for practices and better tools for caring for you and your family.

To support the change, NHS England will help GP teams manage the transition, so your care isn’t disrupted and your information stays safe.

Looking Ahead

This approval is about more than technology it’s about giving people a better experience of care. By listening to feedback and investing in smarter systems, the NHS is building a future where care is more connected, more responsive, and focused on what matters most to you.

As GP practices across the country look to modernise the way they support patients, this new system is just the beginning. Your voices, your experiences, and your needs are at the heart of these changes because better care starts with listening to you.
